A magazine devoted to drawing, The Drawer gives free rein to “drawers" alone, bringing together the drawings and written contributions of around thirty artists and creators every six months.

In English, “the drawer” means “the drawer”. It also refers to “the person who draws”. Embracing the multiple meanings of its title, The Drawer could be seen as a "drawing drawer". In a way, this is what it is: a magazine entirely made up of drawings and devoted to drawing, which can be opened and closed at will, lending itself to the most unexpected associations. The Drawer is therefore aptly named.

Monomaniacal, The Drawer is nonetheless open-minded: it is interested in all drawings, provided they are good, and all artists, provided they draw. Celebrating the practice of drawing in its broadest sense, The Drawer brings together contributions from artists (visual artists, illustrators, designers, architects) and more unexpected creators (singers, writers, musicians, choreographers, directors). What they have in common is the same taste and practice of drawing.

Published twice a year, The Drawer is also thematic. Each issue takes as its starting point the title of a literary, cinematographic or musical work, chosen for its creative and/or fantastical potential (volume 1: Les Temps modernes, volume 2: La Métamorphose, etc.). Each contributor is invited to submit a work, and each drawing published, whether already existing or created especially for the occasion, relates to it.

A playground for expression and creation around a common theme, The Drawer provides insight into the visual and graphic richness of drawing today, as well as the artists and personalities invited to answer a series of questions. Why draw? What to draw? Failed drawings?

Visual above all else, more concerned with typography than text, The Drawer is less to be read than to be looked at, leafed through and pored over. A drawer full of drawings, a portable exhibition, a miniature graphic art cabinet, The Drawer has no other ambition than to share the wonders and pleasures of drawing.

Handcrafted and 100% handmade, it is the result of the work of a small team passionate about drawing: Sophie Toulouse, artistic director, and Barbara Soyer, active in the field of publishing and contemporary art.
